I guess the Sign Craft Team just can’t get enough participation in Community Murals.  We are so excited to partner with Partnerships for Lawrence to sponsor the Lawrence Mural Competition.

This is such a cool project for so many reasons.  These are just a few:

  • Art WagonIt makes an old “boxcar” looking wagon into a public art piece that will reside at the north end of the Lawrence Civic Plaza.  In the summer months, it will be the backdrop for the “Fridays at the Fort” concert series.  In addition, since it can be moved, it will be used for other events such as  the Fourth of July festivities in the park on Franklin Road.
  • For $10 dollars (students $5) anyone with an interest in art has an opportunity to showcase their talents.  This is the perfect opportunity for a student, local artist, emerging artist or a creative member of the community to potentially have their design publicly displayed for all to see and enjoy.
  • The message to be represented by the mural  “What does the Lawrence Community look like to you?”  is broad enough to provide artistic freedom and artistic expression but still be inclusive of components that are specific to the Lawrence community.
  • TheaterThe Public will vote for their favorite of the finalists –  On April 28, 2016, The Theater at the Fort (a beautiful, inviting 200 seat theater) will open its doors to the public for a Toast the Arts event where the finalists entries will be displayed.   During this event, the public can vote for their favorite mural, converse with the artists and enjoy treats and spirits.
  • The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship or prize and learn how to transfer their 12″ x 3″ entry onto the 8′ x 32′ Show Wagon.
  • The community can get involved and actually participate in the physical painting of the mural.  On May 13, 2016 volunteers will come together to paint the winning mural on the Show Wagon.

IMG_3692Sign Craft is excited to Sponsor and participate in this wonderful event.  In 2015, we teamed with various other corporations to do a day of service (DOS) at Indianapolis Animal Care and Control.  As part of this project, several SCI employees worked on transferring the “Homeward Bound” painting (painted and donated to IACC by Susan Kline) onto the Wall of IACC.  (You can read about this DOS in my prior blog “Who gave to Who”).

IMG_3784Our group had a great time working together on the IACC project and decided, as a group, that we are pretty good at this mural thing.  We are excited to make the painting of the Lawrence Show Wagon our community outreach day of service for 2016.  Sign Craft will be out in force on May 13 in our custom made T shirts to transform this bland white boxcar into a public art piece.

Please help get the word out to anyone you believe would like to submit an entry and mark your calendars for the Toast the Arts event on April 28, 2016 and the actual painting of the Mural on May 13, 2016.

Finally, as part of its sponsorship, Sign Craft will donate $1 to  Partnerships for Lawrence for every hit to this blog.
